How to get a list of members from the Directory

Page history last edited by Kathy Lowe 5 years, 6 months ago

Here are the instructions for extracting info from our Member Directory, which is automatically updated continuously as members join or lapse. Although we can't download a list of members from the portal, we CAN copy a list and paste it into a spreadsheet!

One caveat: Members can opt of the Directory, so it is possible that not some members are not listed. If you have questions about specific people, ask Kathy Lowe

Here's how to get a current list of members at any time that you can sort by any field:

1. Go to bit.ly/joinmslaand log in with your email address and password of your choice (If you haven't logged in before, you need to sign up. Be sure to use the same email you used when you joined MSLA. If you don't know what that is, ask me.)

2. Once logged in, you will see your own membership record (which you should check for currency and update as needed). You will notice two other tabs. One is MY Events, showing the MSLA events you have registered for, both past and future.

3. The other tab is Member Directory. Click this tab to see a list of current members. This list is updated continuously as members join, renew or lapse.

4. The Directory lists Name, Company, Work City, Email Address, Region, and URL for the member's personal Website or Blog. You probably won’t see all of these headers on your screen, but at the bottom of the screen, you’ll find a very nondescript slider  [< >]  that you can drag left or right to see the hidden fields.

5. Here’s one way you might use the Member Directory: If you're an AD and want to see all the members in your Region, click on the Region header and the list will sort by Region!. (You can sort the list by any of the headers.)

6. Highlight the members from your region. This is a little tricky, but if you start at the lower right corner of the last record and drag to the left and upward to the top left corner of the first record, you can highlight all the fields for each member. It takes some practice and you might find an easier method. If you do, let us know.

7. Once you have all the lines highlighted, click Ctrl-C (or whatever you use to copy on your device).

8. Open Excel or your spreadsheet of choice. Click on the first cell in the first column and then click Ctrl-V to paste the text into your spreadsheet. Each field will go into its own column so you can then sort the list however you want.

TA DA!  You now have a list of members that you can use to create a targeted email list or whatever. Since memberships change on a daily basis, you should refresh your list anytime you want to send out new information to a sub-group of our members.

Another thing to know about the Directory: When you click on a person's name, you can see if they have elected to be a Resource Member or have volunteered for any of our committees or projects. (The Volunteer list is also posted in the Eboard Handbook and will be updated periodically.)
